Any family related legal issue is never an easy experience and a sensitive approach must be adopted. This also means that it is essential to find an appropriate solicitor for your issue.
We have a large panel of solicitors who provide family legal services,
whether it's a divorce, child custody arrangements or even a prenuptial
agreement, make sure you find the right solicitor for you.
You can search for the right solicitor for you completely free of charge and
the solicitor you choose contacts you directly making sure you speak with the
right person from the start. Read the information below to find out further
information about family law matters and whether you should seek legal advice.
Divorce - You cannot apply for a divorce until the couple have been married for at least one year and there are no exceptions to this rule. If neither partner objects to the divorce then it is not essential to instruct a family solicitor, however, if there is any objection/disagreement then it is vital to instruct an appropriate family solicitor for your case. A divorce is only usually granted because of adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion or two years separation with consent.
Domestic Violence - Domestic violence involves one
individual harming another in some way, with whom they have pre-existing
relationships. This harm does not have to be physical (but this is usually the
case), as verbal harm can also equate to domestic violence or other improper
conduct. Whilst the individuals do not have to be living in the same household,
they do need to be heterosexual partners.
Child Custody - While many parents can negotiate this agreement without the need for legal advice, sometimes, it is not so straight forward. The courts are usually reluctant to award a
'residence order' due to the child having to divide their time between two homes, but if this is what is required under the circumstances, it is essential to contact an appropriate solicitor as soon as possible. This is a very sensitive area of law and above all the child's welfare needs to be the priority, therefore, instructing the right family solicitor is essential.
Prenuptial Arrangements - Sometimes partners do not feel
completely happy with the thought of sharing all assets 50:50 in the event of a
separation later in life. In situations like these, there is legal advice
available to assist in setting up a suitable agreement so in the unfortunate
event of a divorce, there is not an additional complication of how the assets
will be distributed.
Restraining Orders - This is a form of legal injunction which prevents someone from doing something and is usually related to some form of violence or harassment. In these circumstances, finding an appropriate solicitor is essential in order to deal with the problem correctly and quickly.
